Department News

The Department of Social Work was established in the year 1972. It offers a professional undergraduate programme which has very good scope for  employability in NGOs. Students who have graduated from the department have advanced in their career and are spread all over the world working in government and private sectors. A few are working in the educational sector.  Social Work  has a multidimensional approach drawing upon disciplines such as sociology, psychology, research methodology, women and children’s issues, NGO management, social problems, counseling aspects, practicals include concurrent field work, block placement, rural camps and study tours.

Curriculum

  • Observation visit to government and non-governmental organizations
    Concurrent field placement
    Block placement at the end of second year for 15 days for 20 marks
    Field work- 90 hours per year for 50 marks
    Major project in the final year for 100 marks
    Viva voce by external examiner at the end of every year

Activities

Rally against child trafficking on 11.7.2014

This programme was organized to protest against child trafficking, to create an awareness in the public, to create social responsibility among the students.

Prevention of school dropout – June- October 2014

Children resumed studies in the school.

  • State level Exhibition cum Sale 18.9.14 and 19.9.14

About 13 agencies participated in the programme in the college. They displayed and sold their products on the campus for two days. The children also showed their talents in the inaugural as well as at the valedictory function. The exhibition raised Rs.68,423.

  • National Social Work Students Meet at Angamaly, Kerala on 28th and 29th October, 2014

Students developed a better understanding of Social Work. The enriching programmes and interaction with different colleges provided good exposure. Students also developed confidence by participating in wall magazines and presentations on the theme “Let us go greenish otherwise we will perish”.

  • Agency Exposure in Kerala on 31.10.2014

National level exposure programmes provided a wide spectrum of knowledge. Students could also understand the cultural differences of each state.

  • Visit to forest and wild life protection in Kerala on 02.11.2014

Created awareness of the importance of preserving forests and wild life for our survival. The visit underscored concern for ecology and striving for sustainable development.
