ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT  :

The department of Zoology was born on 16thJuly 1962 from the inception of the college along with other science courses. The department was headed by many eminent lecturers starting with Mrs. N. KarunaBabji(1962 to 1995 October). The department is recognized as one of the star departments. It bagged best laboratory award from AcharyaNagarjuna University, Guntur, in 2010. The department also won the best RRC Formation and HIV/AIDS Awareness Award in Krishna District for the year 2010.

The dimensions of biology are fast increasing and rapidly developing  with more and more emphasis on fields like Cell & Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Physiology, Bio-Statistics, Bio-Physics, Bio-Systematic, Bio-Informatics, Applied Ecology, Electron Microscopy and Biotechnology. To suit this scenario  the department of Zoology got opportunity in an autonomous status to introduce relevant syllabus, career and skill enhancing add on courses that have lot of scope for employability and empowerment of students.

    To Contribute significantly to the promotion of higher academic standards in the institution.

    OBJECTIVES

    Objective I: To achieve academic excellence through curricular design
    Line of Actions:

    • To develop relevant curriculum
    • To offer skill based certificate courses
    • To give ecological and social related projects.

    Actions taken:

    • Developed curriculum in the following subjects
    • Environmental Science
    • Biochemistry
    • Bio farming
    • MLT (Medical Lab Technology)
    • Immunology and Endocrinology
    • Ornamental fish culture
    • Offered certificate courses like Bio-farming, ornamental fish culture and aqua culture and vermi technology.
    • Gave training  in Medical Lab Technology and  project work on Ecological, Social, Pollution, Identification of fauna  and Conservation issues.

    Objective II: To help economically  and academically weak students.
    Line of actions:

    • To offer remedial coaching.
    • To recommend student for fee concession.
    • To give counseling through mentoring system.
    • To follow up their attendance.
    • To meet the parents whenever necessary

    Actions taken:

    • The members of the department came forward  to support students on various ways like payment of fees
    • Special coaching during practical hours/extra class hours
    • Remedial coaching
    • Visited students families
    • Counseled and guided students through mentoring
    • Suggested and recommended students for fees concession, mid-day meals, book banks and clothing to the management.
    • Met the parents during parents meet and discussed about their wards performance and attendance.

    Objective III: To promote value based education and personality development
    Line of actions:

    • To encourage students to participate in seminars and workshops.
    • To involve students organize various events conducted by the department.
    • To build self confidence in students

    Actions taken:

    • Help students to prepare power point presentations
    • Involved students to be part of various events conducted by the department like Red ribbon club, Bio club, association meetings, National Seminars and work-shops.
    • Students were prepared to be resource persons to transmit skills related to Vermi-technology.
    • Students were motivated to actively involve in science exhibitions, participate in various seminars and work-shops conducted in and outside of the college and   to present papers.
    • Inculcated in them the values of confidence, courage, truth and better self image through value education classes, personal contacts, sharing of one self, counseling and continuous follow-up.
    • Students were asked to present papers and  take seminars in the classes so us to build up their confidence and overcome stage fear.

Achievements and Activities

The department of Zoology of Maris Stella College, Vijayawada organized a guest lecture on “Ornamental Fish culture” on 11th July, 2014 at 1.30 P.M. to 3 P.M. in the Audio Visual Room. Dr. Mrs. Anitha Susan, Vice Principal, Andhra Christian College, Guntur, was the resource person. In her address she highlighted that among all the hobbies photography stands first in the world followed by aquarium fish keeping. Aquarium fish provide ample opportunities for employment and is currently gaining momentum. 200 students along with staff members participated in the seminar.
To commemorate Dr. Ronald Ross on “World Malarial Day” the Department of Zoology conducted an essay writing competition on “Status of Malaria in India and its Prevalence” on 20th August, 2014. 25 students participated in the competition.


The Departments of Botany, Biotechnology and Zoology felt the need to inculcate in students love for nature and motivate them to take responsibility in conservation of biodiversity. A club through which the activities could be carried out, the Bio Club was formed on 25th August, 2014.

The club organised a talk on “Natural Resources Accounting” on the eve of World Ozone Day (16 September 2014). The resource person was Dr. Ramachandra Prasad, Asst. Prof. Lab for Spatial Informatics International, Institute of Information Technology, Gachibowli, Hyderabad. The Department of Zoology also conducted a poster presentation competition on the theme Ozone Depletion and Global Warming.

The department organised another guest lecture on the ”Importance of Organic Farming in Recent Times” by Mrs. Sarita, SNS Organic Gardens, Vijayawada on 27th October, 2014 at 2 p.m.

Vermi PPT 2015(28.1.15)


The department of Zoology offers Vermiculture, Ornamental Fish Culture and Medical Lab technology under skill based education through which the students learn practical skills. They are taken to local labs and farms for their field work and observation.
To make students more research oriented, we encourage them to take up mini projects during 3rd year. They are taught how to collect relevant data or information from farms, hospitals, internet sources, journals, books and encyclopedia. They are advised to watch TV channels like Discovery, National Geography and Animal Planet and read regularly the daily news papers. Video cassettes are shown to students to learn techniques for research and bring out their potentialities and uniqueness. Field trips are arranged to gain practical knowledge. The students are motivated to participate in intra and inter collegiate competitions, to present papers participate in intercollegiate competitions.

The following event were held during the academic year 2015 - 2016


1. Biology exhibition Held on 13th and 14th, August 2015, to create scientific temper in school children, more than thousand students visited the exhibits from in and around Vijayawada Schools.

 

2. To create awareness on the vector born disease Malaria, the different species of mosquitos involved in spread of various diseases and the means of eradication, one day seminar cum exhibition was organized by the department of Zoology in collaboration with the Malaria Department of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation and Medical and Health Department of Andhra Pradesh, on 20th August 2015.

 

3. The students of III B.Sc. CBZ were taken on a biological tour to Hanumon Junction and Eluru on 30th November, 2015 to have practical knowledge on Poultry farm maintenance, Multi End Products of Sericulture( Reeling and Marketing of silk thread), Palm oil and coconut industry and collections of specimens.

 

 

4. To commemorate the World AIDs day on 1st December 2015, the department of Zoology organized poster presentation by the college students.

 

5. Students were motivated to participate in the Science exhibition held by Gora Science Centre, Vijayawada on 2nd to 4th August 2015, and won 1st prize in B category.

 

6. On 2nd February 2016, the Department Zoology observed World Wet Land Day. The Model of Kolleru Lake was displayed, Dr. Anitha Susan, AC College, Guntur, Dr. S. Subhashini, HOD, KBN College, Dr. Supriya, Hindu College, Guntur and Dr. Vijaya Susheela, HOD, SPMH Kalasal, Machilipatnam visited our department and appreciated the staff and students.
